Mets history might be so different if only… ... While watching SNY’s first installment of Yearbook , Whitey Herzog was seen in full Mets regalia working with young players within the system. If only the Mets had realized what a great mind Herzog had ... Last night’s installment of Yearbook focused on the 1971 season. These films were produced after the season as propaganda for prospective advertisers. Much of the film was seen by the general public for the very first time last evening.

Those who aren't baseball fans ... I don't get them. They can be polite about how it's just not their thing or they can be virulent to the point of obnoxious over "it's so boring" and "who cares about millionaires trying to hit a ball with a stick?" Just to catch you up on New York Mets pitcher depletion matters: ... • Johan Santana, out for the season as you might have suspected once he was scratched from tonight's start. He's going in for "minor" arthroscopic elbow surgery to remove bone chips. I know ... shudder , but they fixed his knee OK, proving perhaps that every Met who goes out with an injury maybe someday comes back. Nick Evans takes his place on the roster, thereby quelling all those urgent "Where's Nick Evans?" inquiries
